Excerpts from Eddie Chatterbox Tour Diaries Part Two (1979 circa)

It would be nice to report that things got better when the Centazzo and Chatterbox duo
was augmented with Japanese trumpeter Kondo-san. Alas, tour diary pages seem to
report the opposite:
"We show up at train with all equipment, 50 cases of percussion. Organizer is five hours
late to meet. Then we get all cases searched on highway by Italian police, looking for
terrorists of the Red Brigade.
"They take us to hotel and they have only small bed for us to share. They take us to
another hotel and is this same kind of thing, we must sleep together. "Then we have fight
with promoter who get so mad that he says to hell with accomodation, the Communists
refuse to provide, it is the local Communist Party promoting the gig.
Reports from the next night continue the descent:
"For four hours have to argue withstudents to keep them from hanging Chatterbox in Klan
Klux Klu style. "Then promoter make big fight about $60. He makes one million posters just
for this city, this is 10 posters for every citizen."
I get so mad I throw my wah wah pedal at the promoter's stomach but he is so fat he
doesn't even feel it.
"On way home everyone tired but Chatterbox yell hello out window at some guy and right
away we get pulled over by fucking Italian Army with machine guns. This some kind
terrorist shit, yelling out window of car. They study Kondo-san passport for one hour.
They search all, every percussion case open on road. Here’s Centazzo:
"Situation so frustrating, Chatterbox and I decide to switch instruments at duo gig in
Alto-Adige, section of Italy taken from Austria after World War
All German speaking teenagers in youth center, but is Italy technically after armistice.
Start out with Satisfaction, Chatterbox play Charlie Watts drum break pretty good but all
I know is riff, not whole chord structure.
"This version gets better reception then rest of duo concert, in fact audience boos when
Chatterbox get on guitar and I take percussion, then Chatterbox leave me alone
to pack up percussion cases, always the drummer is the last guy packing, meanwhile
Chatterbox is across the street at bistro.
Finally I get there, I think too late but it doesn't matter, Chatterbox say 'No luck with girls,
nobody will talk to me because they hated the concert so much.'"
